Schengen Visas

The turnaround time for Schengen visas is currently averaging at 15-20 working days. “France is now issuing visas in five to six days, while Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Italy and Portugal are processing applications within 15 working days; Greece is taking 3 weeks,”

“As of now, we are facing a major challenge with countries like Portugal and The Netherlands,”. These countries have a smaller quota for tourist visas. There are no slots for The Netherlands in Bengaluru as of now, while Mumbai and New Delhi have slots in May and June respectively. We recommends applying for a visa for an easier country like France and visiting The Netherlands on the way if you wish. Spain also has slots available, especially in the late evening hours. It is also offering one of the fastest processing timelines currently, with visas coming in within one to three working days. Appointments for visas to Greece are available within 15 to 20 days. “So people can even plan to travel in May and get a visa right now,” he adds. Finland has a lot of appointments and a processing time of only about two weeks. “But Finland and Norway have a very high rejection rate so that’s something to be aware of if you’re a first-time Schengen traveller.”

Getting that first appointment, however, is another thing. Appointments for France are going full, save for a few slots here and there. A quick check on VFS told us that Bengaluru has slots on 5 May and New Delhi on 12 June, while Mumbai and Kolkata currently have none. Appointments for Italy are available in August in Mumbai, September in Bengaluru and April in Kolkata. While you might not find appointments for Germany right now either, Akash reveals that new slots are expected to open up on 15 April. Switzerland has slots open in May. “A lot of my Applicants have opted for home biometrics, Switzerland made an announcement that all scheduled home biometric appointments stand cancelled indefinitely.” With no appointments until next month and the processing time running up to two weeks, a Swiss holiday may need some quick planning.

United Kingdom

Getting a tourist visa for the UK is currently not half as hard as for Schengen countries. Multiple visa categories make applications and processing times far quicker. “We have had clients who have applied for a standard UK visa and their visas have been processed within 30 days,” says Akash. If you want a visa sooner, opt for the priority (£500 or Rs51,000) or super priority (£800 or Rs81,700) visas—the former is processed within 5-6 working days while the latter is processed in 1-2 working days, “Typically, at this time of the year, regular visas take about 5-6 weeks to be processed. But at this point of time in April, we haven’t seen that happen and visas are still coming in 3-4 weeks. Wait times for appointments are just about 1-2 days as of now,” .

Tips for your International Summer Travels

Plan Early: Planning in advance, even though the visa situation isn’t as bad as last summer. It never hurts to be prepared. “For a Schengen country, four weeks is a standard processing time. So if you have those four weeks in hand, go ahead,” Applying for visas now if you plan to travel in June, to avoid any disappointment in case delays come up in the future.

Plan Wisely: Remember that if you are applying for a visa for a specific Schengen country, you have to spend the most amount of time during your travels in that country. “This is very important and not doing this is technically illegal,” If the country you plan to spend the most time in does not have visa appointments, alter your itinerary to spend more time in a country where the visa appointment is available.”

Book that Slot: Booking an appointment slot even if you’re not completely sure of your plans. “It doesn’t cost much to book a slot and embassies have enough time this year to process your applications. Decisions are coming in really fast this time, so rest assured that you can go ahead with booking your tickets.”

Consider Alternatives: Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives and Mauritius offer easy visas. UAE, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam visas are getting processed within 3-4 working days. South Africa has a 10-day processing time, while New Zealand has a 20-day processing time. Australia has a smooth, fully-digitized application process. If you’re worried about visa hassles for Europe, these destinations are great alternatives to consider.

Also, reason like – because I only got admit from that University is not acceptable. Choosing the university should not come out like it did not matter which university you got through. You should be excited about going to that particular university. 

Q. Which all universities did you apply to (both admits and rejects).

Tip: Visa Officer wants to know if you are really serious about your education. Even if you applied to 4 and were accepted in 1 and got 3 rejects, honesty is the only way. Be honest about which all Universities you chose. Be confident about the selection process you followed and in as short a statement as possible, suggest how you were really happy with the accept.

For example,

On the basis of my specific course requirement, I had shortlisted and applied to four universities. This was amongst my top two choices and I was lucky to get an admit from the same. 

Q. Where did you complete your education?

Tip: Mention the name of the School or College.

Q. Who is sponsoring you?

Tip: Name of your sponsors, you may add that your father and mother are supporting you for your higher education as per the financial documents.

Q. What does your father/mother do?

Tip: The Visa officer basically wants to verify the financial capability of the sponsors. You are advised to go through the Income Tax Returns (ITR), and supporting documents of your sponsors carefully. Have a good idea of the income source of your father, mother and any other person who is sponsoring you. Also, do not simply suggest that he/she is in business or service. Be very clear about the nature of their work and their specific role

For example:

He is the Senior Branch Manager with SBI, Patiala Branch.

Or

She is a Professor at Hyderabad University, she teaches Mercantile Law.

Q. What is your father’s/mother’s/sponsor’s Income?

Tip: Visa Officer wants to know if your sponsor’s annual income is sufficient enough to meet your expenses of studying abroad. They think that money can be put into banks, but annual income is a proof which they heavily rely upon to decide the student’s sponsor’s capability to meet his/her educational expenses. You should mention the annual income as per IT Returns filed and submitted to the University for your I-20.

Q. How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Tip: Such kind of questions is basically to verify whether your family has other members for whom your parents may have to raise fund later on. Basically, such questions are asked to evaluate the balance of income and expenses of the family.

Q. Do you have any relatives in USA?

Tip: Be truthful at this instance. Visa Officer will have a full record of this (about your brother/ sister/ mother/ father) with them. If your distant aunt or uncle stays there, then you don’t have to say about them. All that matters is your immediate relatives i.e. own brother, sister, father or mother. Any of your relative overstaying their legal permitted stay in USA is not favourably considered.

Dress Code

Q. Why don’t you do this course in your country?

Tip: You should know what difference the course would bring to you if done from USA instead of India. If the course is not available in India, you can tell the Visa Officer that it is not offered in India. If the same course is available in India, highlight the differences in the quality of education and the course structure in India and USA. You should convince the Visa Officer that doing this course from USA will add value to your profile. Talk about a few pieces of research being conducted in that field. Technical words work out when other things don’t.

Q. What will you do after completing Studies? Tell me how can you prove that you are going to come back?

Tip: If you intend to work after completing your course then say so. Tell them you are looking forward to working with some companies back in India. It would be good to mention the names of the few companies. If you were working, you could mention that you have an offer of joining your last organization back after completing your education. If you are inclined towards continuing your education and pursuing research, mention the same as well. But do provide a hint that your family continues to be in India and you would want to come back to them once your academic pursuits are over.

Q. Why Study in the USA?

Tip: Visa officer wants to understand your intentions to go to USA. As you are applying for student Visa so you should only talk about how USA offers quality education which would help you bring the best of the world to your country. Focus on highlighting the infrastructure available, the research and the method of teaching. Instead of the country, try to focus on the University and the course to highlight that it is only about education.

Q. Have you received any scholarship? Why has the University granted a Scholarship to you?

Tip: You should know how many scholarships you may get and probably the reason why a university is giving scholarship to your Visa Officer wants to know if you are aware of the scholarship programs and financial aid. Also if you have submitted any Statement of Purpose for the scholarship then mention about that and carry a copy of the same.

Q. Have you got any Loans? How do you plan on repaying your Loan?

Tip: Answer about the quantum of the loan you have applied for and from where you have received the same. Also, as to repay the same, suggest that you are confident to find a good opportunity in India after you graduate and you have all the intent to pay it off with your income. Do not suggest you would be paying off the loan by taking up part-time jobs in the US.

Q. Will you come back to home during vacations/holidays?

Tip: Visa officer wants to assess your ties to your home country and family. You can say that you plan to come back to meet your family and friends here in India. You should not say that you plan to work in USA as that shows you are not financially strong and you are going there to earn money. This will make the Visa officer believe that even after completing your education, you would like to take up a job in USA and try to settle there.

Apart from the above, the visa officer might ask you questions regarding your academic percentage, about your sibling’s education and jobs as well as your current job. Remember, you need to be confident about your purpose – which is education from USA and also is confident that you can afford it.

Difference Between Attestation & Apostil

The Hague Convention and the Apostille

The Hague Convention was a series of international conferences held in the Netherlands between 1899 and 1907 wherein a number of treaties were signed between the member countries. Countries like India, New Zealand, Germany, Peru, The United States etc. are part of the Hague Convention.

The Hague Conference on Private International Law introduced a formulated a treaty called the Apostille Treaty, also known as the Apostille Convention or the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents which states the procedure through which a legal document issued in one of the member countries can be certified as being genuine and can be used for legal purposes in other member countries. The process of getting an Apostille eliminates the need to get the documents verified both in the country of origin and in the one you plan to visit.

An Apostille (the word means ’certification’ in French), is a simpler way of legalizing documents. In order for the documents or certificates to be used for legal purposes in one of the member countries, they must be certified by a recognized official in the country where they were issued. It is a certificate which is issued by the Secretary of State stating that your documents are genuine and are attached to your original documents. There are currently about 117 members of the Apostille Convention.

Getting an Apostille is a much easy process. The Ministry of External Affairs(MEA), an agency of the Central Government, is responsible for issuing the Apostille. So, it cuts down on the Government authorities that need to check and stamp your documents.

Countries like the UAE, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Indonesia, etc. are not part of the Hague Convention. So, in order to enter these countries, an Apostille will not be sufficient. You will need to have your documents attested by a series of government or government-sponsored organizations.

What is Attestation and Why Do You Need to Get Your Documents Attested?

As mentioned above, you would need to get your legal documents verified and stamped by government agencies if you wish to use them abroad. However, when it comes to countries that are not part of the Hague Convention, such as Afghanistan, Canada, China, Iraq etc., an Apostille is not sufficient. You need to have your certificates and documents attested.

Attestation in Dubai, much like an Apostille, is a process to determine the legitimacy of a legal document. When you wish to go out of the country, you must have your documents attested, which will state that they are genuine and can be used for any legal purposes there. Attestation is also done to ensure that the information you provide when applying for the visa is accurate. The process of attestation, unlike that of getting an Apostille, is complicated and lengthy and it is best to hire a certified attestation service to help clear any doubts and to make the process smoother. This is how the procedure unfolds:

  • Notary Department Attestation: The first step is to get the Notary Department’s stamp of authenticity. For this, you can go to the Public Notary Office or Collector’s office in your city or state. Without this, you cannot move on to the next agency for attestation.
  • Home Department Attestation: It is an agency of the state government. Once the Notary Department attests your documents in Dubai, you must bring them to the State Home Department, especially your personal documents. In the case of educational documents, it is the Ministry of Human Resource Development that must stamp those certificates. After this, you move on to the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Attestation: Following the stamp of authenticity by the Notary and the Home Department, it is the MEA which must stamp your documents. The Ministry of External Affairs is responsible for dealing with the foreign matters of the country, so it must attest to the documents before they are sent to the embassy. This is the last government agency of the home country which needs to perform the attestation.
  • Embassy Attestation: After the government organizations of your country have verified that the documents submitted are authentic, the embassy of the country you wish to visit must attest them. You need to go to the concerned embassy in your own state or city. In many cases, embassy attestation is the last step to follow.
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Attestation: If you are planning to visit a Gulf country, your documents must carry the stamp of authenticity of the MOFA of the particular country. It is responsible for the foreign matters of its country and must verify your documents so they can be used there. You do not need to be physically present in the country at the time of attestation.

Happy “4th of July” vs. “Independence Day” –what it says about us.

The prerogative to express one of these greetings is personal and, on the surface, seems perfectly acceptable. Most people think of today as “The 4th of July” with a focus on time off, short family getaways, barbecues, beaches, and of course fireworks and fun. There is nothing wrong with that! After deep contemplation, I realized the very expression is a window into our consciousness and our sentiments of the significance of this day. With Google as my reference, the search for “Happy 4th of July” renders 1,250,000,000 results while “Happy Independence Day” renders 390,000,000 results. 

 I am forced to draw the similarities between Independence Day and Christmas, for both have lost their historical significance and been hijacked by consumerism while their rooted values are diluted. 

It is fair to conclude that one engages the mind in reflecting on the Freedoms our nation was founded on, and the sacrifices of those who answered the call to preserve and protect it. I also believe it solidifies our ownership of those consequential words in our Declaration of Independence…“We hold these Truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” 

 I must confess, that I will forevermore say “Happy Independence Day” henceforth!

1. Admission Process

The admission process is different everywhere. Not just among the countries, but within the Universities of the same countries, too. Sometimes they even differ on courses level. Therefore, there is no holy grail to admission in either US Universities or Europe. However, when looked at the bigger picture, there are some differences we can find:

The admission process in US Universities has a very official approach to the application process. You will be required to take exams like GRE, GMAT, SAT for Academics & TOEFL, IELTS for the English language. There will be a number of proofs and documents required. Personal interviews will be required in some cases, too.

Europe on the other hand will look at the process from a different perspective. The application process is more individual and the student’s abilities are looked on more than test results and certificates. However, this doesn’t mean that you will not require any documents to study in Europe. There are some basic requirements that are always needed to be fulfilled.

2. Tuition Fees

When it comes to the cost of studying in the USA for International Students, the country comes on the pricier side of the matter. US Universities are infamous for pricey University fees and costly education. The Average fee a year to study master’s in the USA falls between 5000 to 50000 US $. Education is in General costly in the USA.

On the other hand, Europe is famous for publicly funded education in countries like Germany, Denmark, and Austria. However, that is not the case everywhere. In the UK, education can be as costly as in the USA. The cost of study in Europe will depend highly on the country and the European University you choose.

3. Student Life

If you have Researched anything about the US campus life and US Universities, you will know how they are heavy on sports and extra-curricular activities. The dorm cultures here are absolutely an experience every international student will thrive for. There is a lot to do on and off-campus besides the studies when you are at one of the Universities in the USA.

When it comes to European universities, they are more traditional regarding their teaching methods and overall approach to University learning. This in no way means that studying at a European University is not fun. They are closer to the cities, and beaming with international students from all around the world. 4. Study in USA vs. Study in Europe

Now, this is something that will contradict what we have just said above. The classes in US Universities are more interactive and student-oriented. You can walk up to your professor if needed anything. The assignments are there throughout the semester, and the GPA is calculated on overall performance across the year.

European University, on the other hand, has classes with more capacity, many things are learned online, and the exams are most likely to come at the end of the semester. European Universities are focused on the way of thinking more than teaching the courses just as they are.

5. Courses on offer

Both the countries run head to head when it comes to Masters’s Degree. We cannot simply compare the courses and the quality of them. The only difference between them is how they are taught and the content they hold subject-wise.

The US Universities are more concentrated on the subjects. The Majors and minors play a big part in subjects you study and the credits you are rewarded for them. A European University relies more on traditional methods (again). They rely more on basics, and before moving to advanced studies, the concentration is more on a solid base.

6. Exam Structure

As you might have understood, the studies and assessments in US Universities run throughout the year. There are regular tests and assignments, and the overall contribution to the course is considered while grading a student at the end of the semester.

European University has a different exam structure. The exams, mostly called ‘finals’ are taken at the end of the year and hold a significant weightage on the final grades. The exams are for 1.5 to 2 hours. The students are assessed and grades are given considering the performance in the exams that are taken at the end of the year.

7. Life off-campus

Both US and Europe are large when it comes to land. Fun fact, they are also similar inland areas is Russia is excluded. The USA is for people who love to be on the road. You can have a memorable road trip with your college friends from US Universities, visit the concerts and music festivals across the country, and spend your leisure time in national parks, metropolitans, or the beaches.

Europe has always been heaven to people who are into traveling. When you are not studying at your European University, you can just take a stroll in the city you are in; and European history will take you in. If the wanderlust is still there, take a Eurail pass, and you are allowed to travel to 28 European countries. Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Berlin are just a few of the cities that will be brought to your doorstep when you study in Europe.
